SQL Server 2005 Workgroup or Standard Edition Overview

Previous Topic: Installing the ServiceCEO Client

ServiceCEO's Database Management Tools ships with a managed version of Microsoft® SQL Server called SQL Server 2005 Express. Most users install this server, which automates many of the complex configuration and maintenance tasks involved in managing a database. However, SQL Server 2005 Express does have some performance limitations, including:

Using the Workgroup or Standard versions of SQL Server to host one or more ServiceCEO databases will prevent this performance degradation, including:

  1. Use of multiple processor machines. For example, SQL Server 2005 supports up to 32 Central Processing Units (CPUs) and 64 GB of RAM.

  2. Expanded RAM capabilities. The Workgroup edition supports 3 GB of RAM, while the Standard edition can use as much RAM as your operating system supports.

See Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Features Comparison website for a graph of the capabilities of the different versions of SQL Server 2005.

Note that SQL Server 2005 Express is included with ServiceCEO as part of the Database Management Tools. If you want to use another version of SQL Server, you will need to purchase it from Microsoft. See the Microsoft website for more information.

Caution!

Caution:
The bit version of your SQL Server will need to match that of your OS Short for Operating System. In other words, if you are running a 64-bit edition OS, you will need to purchase the 64-bit edition of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
